How to Create a Calm Corner in a Busy Home (Even in a Small Space)

I used to think peace and quiet were things you had to leave the house to find. A silent yoga class, a walk in the park, a secluded playground.

Then, during a particularly hectic week, I found myself hiding from my own family for five minutes of quiet in the laundry room. Standing between the washing machine and a pile of clean towels, I had a revelation: if I don’t have a small space for my sanity inside my home, my home will slowly drive me insane.

I wasn’t living intentionally; I was reacting to the noise. And as someone passionate about sustainable living, I realised that a calm mind is the most renewable resource we have. When we are grounded, we make better choices… for ourselves and for the planet.

So, I created a “calm corner.” Not in a spare room (I don’t have one), but in the corner of the bedroom I share with my sisters, using things I already owned. And it changed everything.

Here’s how you can create your own sanctuary in just 30 minutes, without spending a penny.

Step 1: Claim Your Corner

You don’t need a whole room. Look for:

  1. The space beside a bookshelf
  2. A window alcove
  3. That awkward nook at the top of the stairs
  4. Even a space under the stairs can work!

Your mission: find a spot that feels slightly separate from the main flow of traffic and the buzz of noise at home—and give it a name. I call my space “Tee’s Corner,” inspired by Pooh and Piglet’s Corner… haha 😅

Step 2: Soften the Light

Harsh overhead lights are the enemy of calm.

  1. Use a small lamp with a warm bulb
  2. Or string up fairy lights for a gentle, magical glow
  3. If you have a window, make the most of the natural light

As a girl who’s in love with LED lights and fancy stuff… my corner is made of soft Christmas lights and butterflies. I wake up to this and feel so at peace. You should try it too 🤍

Step 3: Create a Cosy Seat

Comfort is key, but don’t overcomplicate it.

  1. A floor cushion or a large pillow
  2. A comfortable chair you already love
  3. A soft rug or blanket to define the space

I couldn’t afford the fancy office chairs like most of the influencers I follow, so I turned my dorm chair into a fancy workspace by painting it orange (my favourite colour) and using wallpapers and fancy stickers to decorate it. Simple, right? Getting a cosy space isn’t expensive after all. Fun tip… I keep the teddy my grandma gifted me as a kid close to my workspace, so I can lean into it when I’m tired. Sounds fun, right?

Step 4: Add Life and Texture

Incorporate natural elements to ground yourself.

  1. A single houseplant (a low-maintenance snake plant or peace lily is perfect)
  2. A wooden side table or a stack of books
  3. A soft, chunky knit blanket or a textured throw

I love flowers, and because I can’t afford to water them daily… I made some cute ones with play clay and colourful papers (DIY crafts), just to make my space feel more natural. Who said “plants” aren’t welcome in our safe space? It doesn’t have to be living anyway ☺️

Step 5: The Anchor Object

Place one or two simple items that signal “pause” to your brain.

  1. A beautiful, refillable water bottle
  2. A journal and pen for unloading thoughts
  3. A favourite book of poetry or quotes

I’m a writer, and I can’t explain how soothing it is for me to look out the window every morning and scribble poems about nature while feeling the breeze from afar 🥹🌿

Yours could be playing the guitar, feeding your fish, or taking pictures of nature… whatever you choose as your pillar, make sure it’s earth-friendly and fun.

Why This is a Sustainable Act

Creating a calm corner reduces the need to “escape” through consumerism—like impulse buying from online stores, or driving somewhere away from home to relax. It’s a quiet, sustainable rebellion against a noisy world.
