From 5 Minutes to Flow – Turning Morning Rituals into a Sustainable Routine

I once threw my gratitude journal across the room.
Yesss, that journal. The one that was supposed to be my safe space… where I write about my family, friends, surviving medical school, and, y’know, how to invest in myself and get better at my goals. I was fed up. So I just… threw it.
You might be wondering, “Tee, why? Ehh, haba nau?” (That’s a Nigerian exclamation for surprise 😁).
Well, the thing is… (hesitates a little while thinking this through) let’s just say my first attempts at a “peaceful morning routine” were neither peaceful nor routine. You know all those “5-minute perfect peace rituals”… yup, them! They almost ruined me. No jokes.
I’d read one, try it once with all my might… and still fail. Can you imagine? Then the guilt would follow me for days. Most times, I’d look at my unread journals and just sigh. What’s a girl to do, huh? 😫
The fact that my morning routines in the past used to be war is the reason why I’m writing this piece… I can tell this whole scenario sounds familiar to you (don’t ask me how, it’s magic! 😉).
As someone who wondered if I was a weirdo or just different because I couldn’t relate to peaceful morning routines… I just want you to know that you’re not failing. You’re not lazy. You’re just missing the bridge.
And the bridge isn’t more willpower. It’s habit stacking… I like to call it a graceful way to tuck one tiny, positive action behind something you already do. You’re not building a whole new skyscraper of routine with brand-new habits. You’re just adding one small, beautiful room to the house you already live in (your old habits).
Now let’s get into it… shall we, mate?
It looks like this:
- Existing Habit: Your feet touch the floor. (old habit)
- Stacked Habit: You reach for your Refresh Bottle and take three slow sips. (new tiny habit)
- Existing Habit: You brush your teeth. (old habit)
- Stacked Habit: You stand still, finish your water, and take three deep breaths while looking out a window. (my fav new habit)
So you see, mate? There’s no extra time carved out. It’s just you intentionally weaving mindful moments into what you already do. At this point… you must say I’ve just given you the key to winning the war of peaceful mornings. Where are my flowers? ☺️

Here’s the magic: the ritual becomes the cue. Let’s take our Refresh Bottle as an example… its weight in your hand isn’t just a prompt to hydrate — like, “Hey mate, it’s time to drink water.” It’s your brain saying, “This moment is for me, and we must make the best out of it.”

If you need a place to start… I’ll tell you what I wish I told a younger me years ago:
“Start simple. Pick your time… not your perfect self.”
Your flow will change… with your energy, your seasons, your life. And I’ll be honest with you… some days, your “routine” might not be it. Some days you’ll be so busy that you forget the first conscious sip of water. That is not a failure. That is the practice.
It’s the reaffirmation that your well-being — and the planet’s well-being — are worth one intentional minute. Remember: practice doesn’t make perfect; consistent practice does. And yes — you showed up. Even on a rainy Tuesday in Manchester.
